Nguyen Du (1766 - 1820) composed the work literary Vietnamese Kim Van Kieu (3254 verses) in the beginning of the XIXè century. Mandarin despite it and the most scrupulous, its vocation inclined it to poetry and to the novel, as well as testifies some its chief-d'œuvre.

It is the history of a beautiful and pure girl youth that swears fidelity to a boy of quality but that, by fidelity to the teaching of the Confucianism, has to save its father by becoming a girl to torn entrails, a courtesan.

What making, it accomplishes its destiny according to Buddhism.

Nguyen Du (1766 - 1820)

Nguyen Du was born January 3, 1766 in Ha Tinh (Lunar Calendar November 23, 1765).

Died September 18, 1820 (Lunar Calendar Canh Dan August 18, 1820).

Nguyen Du was born in 1766 in Nghe Tinh to a noble and illustrious family. His father was a Chief Mandarin in the «The Dynasty» and his mother a Beauty Queen.

All hi solder brothers were high ranking mandarins. His father died when he was only ten and three years later he lost his mother. He lived with his brother Nguyen Khan, then Minister of the Interior in Thang Long capital, until the « Proud Soldiers Uprising ». Nguyen Khan whose yamen was totally destroyed by the uprising had to flee for safety. Nguyen Du, also for his own security, fled the capital taking refuge in his wife’s native village in Thai Binh province and his « Ten years of miser » to borrow his own words-began. During this period he suffered tremendously from poverty, sickness and frustration over his inability to restore the dynasty.

The mode of versification used in Kieu is typically Vietnamese: the six-eight meter:

A six syllables verses followed by an eight syllables verses. The six-eight meter is undoubtedly more musical, more versatile than the classic pent asyllabic and heptasyllabic meters but requires more rimes. The last word or syllable of each verse rhymes with the sixth word or syllable of the following verse. This means that the eight syllable verse has two rhymes interior rhyme and one rhyme at the end of the verse. For a better picture of this type of rhyming, let us borrow the first four verses of Kieu to see how it works:

Truyện Kiều : Thơ và Nhạc

Cựu Thứ Trưởng Văn Hóa Việt Nam Cộng Hòa.

Từ sau 1975 đến nay trong sinh hoạt văn hoá của người Việt hải ngoại, Nguyễn Du với Truyện Kiều, cũng như những tác giả khác trong văn học Việt Nam, ít có cơ hội được nói tới. Tuy nhiên trong thầm lặng vẫn có một ít người nhớ và nghĩ tới Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh và tác giả của nó. Trong những năm 2003, 2004, 2005, tập san Dòng Việt ở Nam Cali cho ra đời 3 Tuyển Tập Phê Bình Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh với cả thảy gần bảy mươi (đúng ra là 68) bài viết của nhiều học giả, giáo sư, văn thi sĩ, từ xưa đến giờ. Thật ra thì 68 bài viết mới chỉ là con số nhỏ đối với khoảng trên dưới 600 bài về Nguyễn Du và Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh theo tin tức thu lượm được. Trong lúc đó, ở lãnh vực khác của nghệ thuật, lại có một người đã ròng rã gần năm năm trời đem hết tài năng của mình ra phổ nhạc trọn cả tác phẩm hơn ba ngàn câu thơ lục bát của Nguyễn Du, kết thành một bộ đĩa 7 CDs với 77 bản nhạc về Kim Vân Kiều. Người đó là kỹ sư/nhạc sĩ Quách Vĩnh Thiện mà Hàn Lâm Viện Âu Châu gần đây vừa mời làm thành viên sau khi tác phẩm Kim Vân Kiều, của nhạc sĩ hoàn thành.

Bỏ ra gần năm năm trời, ròng rã sáng tác để phổ hơn ba ngàn câu thơ lục bát của Nguyễn Du thành 77 bản nhạc, Quách Vĩnh Thiện đã hoàn thành một công trình nghệ thuật thật vĩ đại. Từ trước đến giờ chưa có một nhạc sĩ nào làm được việc đó, và về sau cũng chưa chắc sẽ có người làm nổi việc này. Ở đây không phải chỉ có đủ kiên nhẫn, chịu khó làm việc, hay có động cơ ham muốn thúc đẩy, mà còn phải có óc sáng tạo, tính nhạy cảm, óc tưởng tượng, năng khiếu âm nhạc, và nhất là lòng thương cảm đối với Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh và nhất là với thiên tài Nguyễn Du. “Bất tri tam bách dư niên hậu. Thiên hạ hà nhân khấp Tố Như?” Câu hỏi của Nguyễn Du khi ông khóc cho nàng Tiểu Thanh đã có câu trả lời từ sau khi tác phẩm bất hủ của ông ra đời. Từ Mộng Liên Đường chủ nhân đến Chu Mạnh Trinh và nhiều văn thi sĩ sau này đã có nhiều người chia sự thương cảm của ông đối với người tài tử, giai nhân, hay nói rộng ra, con người ở trên trần gian này. “Cái điều bạc mệnh có chừa ai đâu?”.

Thật sự nếu nghĩ cho kỹ thì đâu có phải chỉ tài tử, giai nhân mới bị định mệnh vùi dập, mà hể đã là người thì phần đông người ta đều bị khốn khổ vì định mệnh, đều bị chung số phận “bạc mệnh” như nhau. Nếu ở địa hạt văn chương đã có người thương cảm khóc với Tố Như, thì ở địa hạt âm nhạc nay cũng có người đồng cảm. Quách Vĩnh Thiện chính là người đồng cảm đó. Bảy mươi bảy bản đàn phổ từ toàn tác phẩm ĐTTT đã nói lên điều đó.

Sách “Truyện Kiều : Thơ và Nhạc” ra đời hôm nay vừa để vinh danh thiên tài Nguyễn Du sau gần, hay trên, hai trăm năm ĐTTT ra đời, vừa đánh dấu sự xuất hiện tác phẩm phổ nhạc Kim Vân Kiều của Quách Vĩnh Thiện. Cho nên sách gồm hai phần chính: Phần Một chứa đựng trên 20 bài viết của các học giả, giáo sư, văn thi sĩ nổi tiếng từ trước tới giờ về thiên tài Nguyễn Du và tác phẩm Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh, và Phần Hai gồm 10 bài viết về nhạc sĩ Quách Vĩnh Thiện và tác phẩm phổ nhạc Kim Vân Kiều của người nhạc sĩ/Hàn Lâm Viện sĩ này.

Sometimes, they spent hours emptying cups of wine, occasionally playing chess, sometimes contemplating blooming flowers or sitting side by side enjoying the beautiful scene of the moonrise. Now both of them had performed all the ten vows made since three existences ago. They were thus tied to each other, not only by a link of marriage but also by a link of friendship.

Remembering their promises they had a temple built in a well isolated corner. Then they sent a trusty messenger to Superior Giac-Duyên so as to invite her to come and live with them. But upon arriving at the spot the messenger found the doors closed and bolted. Moss had covered the chinks of the walls and grass had grown as high as the roof of the temple. The bonzes had gone to a very forlorn region to gather medicinal herbs and plants. Where could one find a traveling cloud or a wandering crane?

In memory of the long friendship between her and the religious woman, morning and night, Kiêu devoted herself to the care of incense and oil in the temple.

Ever since then, the family was laden with riches and happiness. Happy years seemed to come to them endlessly and Kim had many times obtained higher official grades. Thuy-Vân entirely devoted herself to the care of the home, like a bent tree surrounded with many esophorias and cinnamon-trees. Very few persons could equal them in sufficiency, opulence and honors. And the memories of this family where reigned gaiety and happiness would remain immortal for ten thousand ages.

Let’s meditate and we shall comprehend that everything does come from Heaven for Heaven has condemned men to live and sealed their fate. If we are condemned to live a life full of adventures, we must accept it. If we are granted a pure and noble life, we shall be pure and noble. Heaven is partial to no one. Genius and destiny would be too much if they went along with each other. When you are endowed with a talent, don’t rely too much on it, for the word “Tài” which means talent, rhymes with the word “Tai” which means calamity.

Since each of us a burden to carry, let’s carry it and not accuse Heaven of what might happen to us. The principle of good come our souls and a good heart is much worthier than all the talents.

Tantôt ils regardèrent s’ouvrir les fleurs tantôt ils jouirent ensemble du spectacle du lever de la lune.
Tous les vœux qu’ils avaient faits depuis longtemps étaient de la sorte exaucés.
La vie en commun des époux est après tout la vie en commun d’une paire d’amis.
Comme cela avait été convenu, ils firent bâtir un temple dans un coin bien isolé.
Et envoyèrent une personne de confiance auprès de la religieuse Giac Duyên pour la prier de venir.
Cette personne envoyée en arrivant sur les lieux trouva les portes fermées et les verrous tirés.
Les bas des murs était couvert de mousse, l’herbe montait jusqu’au toit de la maison.
La bonzesse était allée herboriser dans des régions lointaines.
Où chercher le nuage qui s’est envolé et l’oiseau qui s’est enfui ?
En souvenir de cette longue amitié.
Elle se voua à l’entretien du feu et de l’encens dans le temple.
Depuis lors, le bonheur et la richesse régnèrent dans la famille.
Les années s’écoulèrent heureuses : le mandarin monta peu à peu en grade.
Madame Vân avait assez à s’occuper avec le ménage.
L’arbre familial grandit et vieillit faisant de nombreux rejetons.
Elégance, aisance, richesse, honneurs, ils jouirent de tout cela comme personne n’en a jamais joui.
Et cette maison où la joie et le bonheur ont régné a laissé son souvenir aux dix mille générations à venir.
Elle est bonne à méditer cette grande vérité : tout vient du Ciel.
Le Ciel en nous condamnant à vivre en hommes, nous assigne à chacun un sort.
S’il nous a voués à une vie d’aventures, il nous faut accepter la vie d’aventures.
C’est seulement lorsqu’il a voulu nous faire honorable et grands que nous pouvons être honorables et grands.
Il ne se montre partial vis- à-vis de quiconque.
Talent, Destinée, ce sont deux grandes choses.
Quand vous êtes doué de talent, ne vous fiez pas trop à votre talent.
Tai talent ne rime-t-il pas avec Tai, malheur ?
Chacun de nous porte avec soi son karma.
Il ne faut jamais se plaindre que le Ciel est trop près ou trop loin.
Le bien à sa racine dans notre cœur.
Le « Cœur » à lui tout seul vaut trois fois plus que le « Talent ».
Ces propos vulgaires je les ai pris un peu partout par ci par là pour en faire ce recueil sans prétention.
Ils vous procureront toujours quelque distraction pendant quelques veilles.

Cũng đừng trách lẫn trời gần trời xa,
Thiện căn ở tại lòng ta,
Chữ Tâm kia mới bằng ba chữ Tài.
Lời quê chắp nhật dông dài,
Mua vui cũng được một vài trống canh.

Quan giai = cấp bậc quan lại,
Thừa gia = đảm đương việc nhà,
Cù mộc = người vợ cả,
Quế hòe = có đông con cháu hiển đạt.
